BOUNTY’S
JOLLY BOAT

In April 1789, the H.M.S. Bounty left Tahiti and whilst passing through the Endeavour Channel, a number of the crew staged a mutiny. Captain Blight and 18 loyal crewmembers were forced by the mutineers into one of the three small lifeboats and were cast adrift. The craft, powered by a large sail and with four men rowing at a time, covered 3,600 miles until they reached the safety of Timor.

BON RETOUR

A shell fishing boat from the Brest Region, built in 1952 at the Tertu du Fret shipyards, used for scallop fishing until 1980.  The boat is currently under the management  of the TUD AR MOR association founder for the protection of the maritime culture.

SANTISIMA TRINIDAD

 

The biggest warship of the XV111 Century. Built up on 1769 in the shipyard of Havana (Cuba), it took part at the Battle of TRAFALGAR IN 1805.  To commemorate the bicentenary of this battle, Artesania Latina reproduces the captain’s boat of the Santisima Trinidad.

BREMEN

Shrimp fishing cutters first appeared in 1898, and were virtually restricted in the North Sea. Ten years later they began to be fitted with 8-10 hp motors and were usually about 10 meters in length.

The Amsterdam tugboat was built in the Johan Alkers Shipyard in Hamburg Germany, in 1971. It was specially built to handle and serve very large ships and super tankers of this modern age. Three other sister ships were built called: Malabar, Tenace and Centour, which serving at this moment with the French Navy.

SANSON

The Sanson was a high sea tug from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Its engine was driven by a steam boiler that could produce up to 2000hp, reaching speeds of up to 14 knots. It was filled with large fenders at the bow and along the sides. Generally, its function was not so much to tow, but rather to “push” the transatlantic giants.

The Marie Jeanne, is a tuna boat from the French Harbor of Concarneau, was a part of the fish sailing fleet, which sailed from 1900 to 1930. The general trend towards engine propulsion contributed to the end of those elegant fishing boats, which often sported colorful sails.

A French Schooner with 8 eighteen pounder carronades, was in service between 1823  and 1843.  It was launched in Toulon on August 13, 1823 and took part in the Spanish war under the command of Commodore Joursin.  Stationed first in Barcelona and later Cadiz, it played an active role in the bombardment of this second port.

The Baltimore Clippers could be painted in disreputable colors, with their sails torn or with pitch everywhere, but they were always elegant and last into the wind. These ships dominated the seas in the late 19th century, when the first steamers started to do battle with their heroic predecessors. The Harvey was one of the first clippers to be built.

MAYFLOWER

Their region having been declared illegal, an group of English puritans set sail for America in the Mayflower, on September 6, 1620, under the orders of the ship’s Captain, Christopher Jones. The Mayflower was destroyed on its return to England in 1624. A replica was built three centuries later and presented in the ports of New York, Miami and Washington. It presently serves as a floating museum, riding at anchor in the port of Plymouth, United States.

JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO

This 4 masted bergantin of the Spanish Navy, a Naval Academy Training Ship, was launched in Cadiz on March 56, 1927. I preparation of the great of race of 3,600 miles between Lisbon and Hamilton in 1964, some of her sails were amended and after some hard training, the ship reached a speed of 15 knots. She has a crew of 36 officers, 143 sailors and 70 marines. The shop has 2 saluting cannons and her total weight is 94.13mm.

U.S. CONSTELLATION

The U.S. Constellation started her active life in 1798 and was withdrawn from service in 1955. Her missions included seizing numerous ships, defending the Hawaiian Island against annexation by the British in 1843 and transporting food to Ireland during the Great Famine of 1845 – 1849. It was also the first U.S. warship to visit China in1842, and it became a training vessel in 1871. Today, it brings back glorious memories to tens of thousands of tourists who visit her each year in Baltimore.

SAN JUAN
NEPOMUCENO

A 2,700-ton vessel with 74 cannons launched in 1756, the San Juan Nepomuceno represents for the Spaniards a wonderful example of the heroic temper of their race and of the bravery of their sailors. Commanded by Admiral Cosme Damian Churruca, the San Juan Nepomuceno fought at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and there won imperishable glory through suffering and death. Admiral Nelson, mortally wounded, continued directly the battle, while Admiral Churruca, whose leg was shot off by a cannon ball, continued commanding his ship, ordering fire!

H.M.S. VICTORY
1765

The first class ship H.M.S. Victory was launched on May 7, 1765. It played an important part in the English fleet from 1778 to 1812, and built its reputation in the important battles at Ushant (1781) and San Vicente (1797). But it was October 21, 1805 at the Cape of Trafalgar where, under the command of Admiral Nelson, this fabulous ship brought victory to the English fleet over the Spanish French armada. The battle of Trafalgar, whose bicentenary will be October 21, 2005, marked the climax and supremacy of the Royal Navy when H.M.S. Victory made history. As a museum since 1992, the Victory can be seen and admired in the Royal Navy port in Portsmouth. (England)

SANTA ANA
1784

The Santa Ana was built at El Ferrol, Spain in 1784.  She was a prototype of a series of 8 ships and carried 112 guns.  In Trafalgar, 1805, she fought against the Royal Sovereign.  After more than three hours with over 100 men killed, her rigging destroyed and surrounded by many British ships, she surrendered.  But, during the heavy storm that followed the battle, her crew seized her and the Santa Ana arrived to Cadiz.

H.M.S. SURPRISE
1796

 

A British Frigate built at Le Havre in 1794 as a 24.8 lb long guns French corvette, I’Unite was captured in 1796 by the British and renamed H.M.S. Surprise. She was rearmed and classified as a sixth-rate frigate. She inspired the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O’Brian and featured in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
